Description

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons lemon zest
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice
  • Powdered sugar for glazing

Instructions

  1. Combine the dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Set aside to let the yeast activate.
  2. Heat the wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, warm the milk and melt the butter together.
  3. Pour the warm milk mixture into the dry ingredients and add the eggs, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Knead gently until smooth and elastic—about 5 to 8 minutes.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm area until doubled—roughly 1 hour.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and flatten it into a rectangle. Spread a layer of softened butter, sprinkle the sugar and additional lemon zest.
  7. Roll the dough tightly into a log and slice it into equal pieces.
  8. Cover the rolls and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Mix powdered sugar with lemon juice and drizzle over the warm rolls. Serve immediately.

Notes

Allow the rolls to cool before storing. Can be frozen for up to three months.
