- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons lemon zest
- 1/2 cup lemon juice
- Powdered sugar for glazing
Instructions
- Combine the dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Set aside to let the yeast activate.
- Heat the wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, warm the milk and melt the butter together.
- Pour the warm milk mixture into the dry ingredients and add the eggs, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead gently until smooth and elastic—about 5 to 8 minutes.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm area until doubled—roughly 1 hour.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and flatten it into a rectangle. Spread a layer of softened butter, sprinkle the sugar and additional lemon zest.
- Roll the dough tightly into a log and slice it into equal pieces.
- Cover the rolls and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Mix powdered sugar with lemon juice and drizzle over the warm rolls. Serve immediately.
Notes
Allow the rolls to cool before storing. Can be frozen for up to three months.
