- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon red food coloring
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two round cake pans.
- Mix the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.
- Combine sugar and oil in a large mixing bowl, whisking until mixed well.
- Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in buttermilk, food coloring, and vanilla extract.
- Gradually fold in the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool the cakes for 10 minutes in the pans before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
- Prepare the frosting by beating cream cheese and butter until smooth, then gradually mixing in powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
- Assemble the cake by spreading frosting between layers and on top and sides of the cake.
- Decorate with shaved chocolate or fresh berries if desired.
- Serve and enjoy your red velvet cake!
