Description

An amazing, soft, and vibrant dessert that combines rich cocoa flavor with tangy cream cheese frosting.


Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two round cake pans.
  2. Mix the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. Combine sugar and oil in a large mixing bowl, whisking until mixed well.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in buttermilk, food coloring, and vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually fold in the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool the cakes for 10 minutes in the pans before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. Prepare the frosting by beating cream cheese and butter until smooth, then gradually mixing in powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
  9. Assemble the cake by spreading frosting between layers and on top and sides of the cake.
  10. Decorate with shaved chocolate or fresh berries if desired.
  11. Serve and enjoy your red velvet cake!
