Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Zest and juice of 1 orange

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour your cake pans.
  2. Mix the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. Cream the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then add the vanilla extract.
  5. Incorporate the dry mixture gradually, alternating with the milk, mixing until just combined.
  6. Fold in the orange zest and juice gently into the batter.
  7. Divide the batter into two bowls. Mix the remaining zest and juice into one half.
  8. Layer the batters alternately in the prepared pans and swirl them gently for marbling.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  10. Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
