Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Optional: Sprinkles, colored sugar, or icing for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line your baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Cream butter and sugar together in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes).
  3. Add in the egg and vanilla extract, mixing well until fully incorporated.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually incorporate these dry ingredients into the wet mixture.
  5. Stir gently until combined. Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick. Use a heart-shaped cutter to stamp out cookies.
  7. Place cutouts on the prepared baking sheets and bake for 10-12 minutes until edges turn lightly golden.
  8. Cool on wire racks before decorating. Serve and share with family and friends.

Notes

Use cold butter for better shape retention, and always chill the dough before rolling it out.
