- 4 cups fresh apples (like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and chopped
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup heavy cream (for salted caramel)
- 1 teaspoon sea salt (for salted caramel)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a large sheet pan (about 13×18 inches) with butter or line it with parchment paper.
- Peel, core, and chop the apples into bite-sized pieces. Toss them with a little cinnamon and set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition, followed by the vanilla extract.
- In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk or sour cream, and mix until fully incorporated. Gently fold in the chopped apples.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for about 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- For the salted caramel, heat sugar and water in a saucepan until it melts into an amber color. Carefully whisk in cream and sea salt until smooth and allow to cool slightly.
- Once the cake has cooled, drizzle salted caramel generously over the top.
- Slice into squares and enjoy warm, optionally with whipped cream or ice cream.
Notes
For a dairy-free version, use coconut oil instead of butter and a non-dairy milk for the sour cream. Optional toppings include chopped nuts for added texture.
