Description

A delightful sheet cake featuring fresh apples and a decadent salted caramel sauce, perfect for autumn gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups fresh apples (like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for salted caramel)
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt (for salted caramel)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a large sheet pan (about 13×18 inches) with butter or line it with parchment paper.
  2. Peel, core, and chop the apples into bite-sized pieces. Toss them with a little cinnamon and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition, followed by the vanilla extract.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk or sour cream, and mix until fully incorporated. Gently fold in the chopped apples.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for about 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. For the salted caramel, heat sugar and water in a saucepan until it melts into an amber color. Carefully whisk in cream and sea salt until smooth and allow to cool slightly.
  8. Once the cake has cooled, drizzle salted caramel generously over the top.
  9. Slice into squares and enjoy warm, optionally with whipped cream or ice cream.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use coconut oil instead of butter and a non-dairy milk for the sour cream. Optional toppings include chopped nuts for added texture.
