Description

A delightful pastry combining flaky dough with tender spiced apples, perfect for sharing with family and friends.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 34 apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and sugar, then cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually stir in milk until dough forms. Gather into a ball, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least one hour.
  2. Make the Filling: While the dough chills, peel and core apples, then slice thinly. Toss apple slices with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nuts if using, ensuring every slice is well-coated.
  3. Roll Out the Dough: Once chilled, divide the dough in half. Roll out one half into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick and transfer it to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  4. Fill and Fold: Spread the apple filling in the center of the dough, leaving some space on the edges. Make diagonal cuts along the sides of the filling, then fold the cut strips over the filling, alternating sides to create a braided effect.
  5. Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the Kringle for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Prepare the Glaze: While it bakes, mix powdered sugar with a splash of milk until drizzling consistency. Drizzle this glaze over the top after the Kringle has cooled slightly.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Slice the warm Wisconsin Apple Kringle, serve it, and enjoy the smiles!

Notes

Ensure butter is very cold for the flakiest texture. Handle dough gently to keep layers light and airy.
