- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 3 large egg whites (room temperature)
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- Red food coloring
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 1 cup powdered sugar (for filling)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C) and line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.
- Sift together almond flour and powdered sugar in a bowl.
- Beat egg whites in a clean bowl until foamy, then add cream of tartar and gradually mix in granulated sugar until medium peaks form.
- Gently fold in the almond flour mixture and add food coloring until desired shade is reached.
- Pipe circles onto prepared sheets, leaving space between each, and gently tap the tray to release air bubbles.
- Let the piped macarons sit at room temperature for 30-60 minutes to form a skin.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes or until they lift easily off the parchment.
- Cool shells completely before removing them.
- Mix together butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth to make the filling.
- Pair similar sized macaron shells, pipe filling on one, and gently press the other shell on top.
Notes
For a festive twist, consider flavoring your filling with peppermint or eggnog spice.
