Description

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • Additional milk (for frosting)
  • Optional toppings: sprinkles, edible glitter, fresh berries

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour 6-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Whisk until blended.
  3. Cream together softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy (3-5 minutes).
  4. Add eggs and vanilla to the mixture and mix well.
  5. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk to the wet mixture until just combined.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  8. For frosting, beat together softened butter with powdered sugar and a splash of milk until desired consistency is reached.
  9. Once cool, frost layers and stack, then frost outer sides. Decorate as desired.

Notes

For a gluten-free option, use almond or coconut flour. For dairy-free, substitute coconut oil for butter.
