- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 pinch salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
- Additional milk (for frosting)

Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour 6-inch round cake pans.
- In a bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Whisk until blended.
- Cream together softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy (3-5 minutes).
- Add eggs and vanilla to the mixture and mix well.
- Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk to the wet mixture until just combined.
- Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
- For frosting, beat together softened butter with powdered sugar and a splash of milk until desired consistency is reached.
- Once cool, frost layers and stack, then frost outer sides. Decorate as desired.
Notes
For a gluten-free option, use almond or coconut flour. For dairy-free, substitute coconut oil for butter.
