Description

A classic Southern dessert with layers of creamy banana pudding, ripe bananas, and vanilla wafers that bring back memories of family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1 box vanilla wafers
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar and cornstarch. Gradually whisk in milk over medium heat until thickened like custard. Remove from heat.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat eggs. Temper them with a bit of hot pudding, then mix back into the saucepan. Stir in butter and vanilla.
  3. Layer vanilla wafers, sliced bananas, and pudding mixture in a large glass dish, repeating layers until full.
  4. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  5. Before serving, top with whipped cream and crushed vanilla wafers.

Notes

For best results, allow the pudding to sit overnight to enhance the flavors and texture.
