  • Author: joe
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 10 servings 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

A delightful homemade candy that balances sweet and salty flavors, evoking memories of summer fairs and family traditions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup corn syrup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter (unsalted)
  • Flavoring extracts (e.g., vanilla, peppermint)
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease a baking sheet with butter.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir until the sugar is dissolved, then stop stirring and bring the mixture to a boil. Monitor the temperature with a candy thermometer.
  3. Once the mixture reaches 260°F (hard ball stage), remove it from heat. Stir in salt and butter until melted and smooth.
  4. Pour the hot mixture onto the greased baking sheet and allow it to cool for a few minutes until it’s cool enough to handle.
  5. Butter your hands well and start pulling the taffy, stretching it until it becomes glossy and lightens in color, about 10 minutes.
  6. Form the taffy into long ropes and cut into bite-sized pieces. Wrap each piece in wax paper.
  7. Enjoy the taffy with family and friends or keep some for yourself!

Notes

For a natural twist, substitute corn syrup with honey or agave syrup. Customize flavors with vanilla bean or fruit purees.
