Description
A delightful homemade candy that balances sweet and salty flavors, evoking memories of summer fairs and family traditions.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup corn syrup
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter (unsalted)
- Flavoring extracts (e.g., vanilla, peppermint)
- Food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- Lightly grease a baking sheet with butter.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir until the sugar is dissolved, then stop stirring and bring the mixture to a boil. Monitor the temperature with a candy thermometer.
- Once the mixture reaches 260°F (hard ball stage), remove it from heat. Stir in salt and butter until melted and smooth.
- Pour the hot mixture onto the greased baking sheet and allow it to cool for a few minutes until it’s cool enough to handle.
- Butter your hands well and start pulling the taffy, stretching it until it becomes glossy and lightens in color, about 10 minutes.
- Form the taffy into long ropes and cut into bite-sized pieces. Wrap each piece in wax paper.
- Enjoy the taffy with family and friends or keep some for yourself!
Notes
For a natural twist, substitute corn syrup with honey or agave syrup. Customize flavors with vanilla bean or fruit purees.
