Description
A family favorite, this Homemade Popcorn Chicken celebrates love and memories with its crispy, tender bites coated in seasoned buttermilk and spices.
Ingredients
Scale
- Boneless chicken (breast or thighs)
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- Marinate the Chicken: Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces and soak them in a mixture of buttermilk, garlic powder, and paprika for at least an hour, preferably overnight.
- Prepare the Breading: Mix the seasoned flour with salt and pepper in a separate bowl. Optionally, add dried herbs like oregano or thyme.
- Heat the Oil: In a deep skillet or pot, heat the oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Coat the Chicken: Remove chicken from the buttermilk, letting excess liquid drip off. Dredge each piece in the flour mixture and shake off extra flour.
- Fry to Perfection: Drop the coated chicken into the hot oil in batches, frying until golden brown and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes per batch.
- Drain and Serve: Transfer the fried chicken to a paper towel-lined plate. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces.
Notes
For a twist, substitute chicken with tofu, or use Greek yogurt mixed with milk instead of buttermilk. Serve with honey mustard, barbecue sauce, or zesty ranch dipping sauce.
