Description

A classic Southern dish featuring crispy fried chicken with a golden coating, often served with gravy and sides.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 chicken thighs (or breasts)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (or buttermilk)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Oil for frying (peanut oil recommended)

Instructions

  1. Rinse and pat dry the chicken. Season both sides with salt, pepper, and chosen spices.
  2. Set up a dredging station with flour in one bowl, beaten eggs mixed with milk in another, and seasoned flour in a third.
  3. Dip each piece of chicken in flour, then egg mixture, and coat again in seasoned flour.
  4. Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat, ensuring it’s hot enough.
  5. Fry chicken for 5-7 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F.
  6. Let chicken rest on a wire rack to maintain crispiness. Optionally, prepare gravy with drippings.

Notes

For extra flavor, allow chicken to rest after frying. Ensure oil temperature is right to avoid greasy chicken.
