Description

A comforting Southern favorite, this Cheddar Vidalia Onion Pie combines sweet Vidalia onions with sharp cheddar cheese for a delightful balance of flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 34 cups thinly sliced Vidalia onions
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 9-inch pie crust
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk (or cream)
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon fresh herbs (thyme or parsley)

Instructions

  1. Sauté the onions: Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat, add onions, season with salt, and cook until soft and golden, about 15-20 minutes.
  2. Prepare the crust: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Fit the pie crust into a pie plate and pre-bake for 10 minutes.
  3. Combine the filling: In a bowl, whisk together eggs and milk. Add cheese, sautéed onions, salt, and pepper; mix well.
  4. Fill the crust: Pour the onion and cheese mixture into the prepared pie crust.
  5. Bake: Bake for 30-35 minutes until filling is set and top is golden brown.
  6. Cool and serve: Allow the pie to cool slightly before slicing; serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

For best results, sauté onions on low heat and be careful not to rush the cooking process. This helps enhance their natural sweetness.
