Delightful scones infused with zesty orange and warm chai spices, perfect for breakfast or an afternoon snack.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/2 cup cream or milk
  • 1 large egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and chai spices until well-combined.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add the orange zest and mix to distribute evenly.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix cream and the beaten egg, then pour into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined.
  6. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently, then pat into a circle about 1-inch thick.
  7. Cut into wedges or use a biscuit cutter for round shapes and place them on the baking sheet.
  8. Brush the tops with additional cream and bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Cool on the pan for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
