Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups cake flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup brown sugar (for caramel)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for caramel)
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt (for caramel)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well incorporated.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until pale and fluffy (about 3-5 minutes).
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
  5. Add the flour mixture and milk alternately, beginning and ending with the flour, mixing just until incorporated.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and smooth the tops. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. For the caramel, in a saucepan, combine brown sugar, heavy cream, and butter over medium heat. Stir continuously until bubbling and thickened (about 5 minutes). Remove from heat and stir in sea salt.
  9. Once the cakes are cool, assemble by placing one layer on a serving platter, spreading salted caramel on top, then adding the second layer. Drizzle the remaining caramel over the top.
